Suggested Itinerary

Surf & Turf Safari

Day 1

You should to plan to arrive in East London on SA flight 471 @ 11.30. A shuttle will meet and transfer you to Kei Mouth.  It is just over 1 hours’ drive to Kei Mouth from the airport

We meet at the Kei Mouth Country Club for a light lunch and to change into your riding clothes. In the afternoon the first part of your adventure begins.  You venture across the Great Kei River, loading the horses onto the pontoon and onto the beaches of the Wild Coast.  An relaxing ride along the beach brings us to Trennery's around Sunset.

Day 2

Today is about exploring and ensuring that you are well matched to your horse.  The trails during the morning take you through a kaleidoscope of rural Xhosa village, mysterious waterfalls, rolling hillsides and of course a mandatory beach canter.  After a picnic lunch, more water falls, and long canters over the endless hills sides ensure that you have had a good first days riding!

Day 3

Heading north, we pass the remains of the Jacaranda ship wreck and depending on the tide either cross the river at the mouth or turn inland across country and through rural villages to cross the Kobonqaba River further upstream.  The horses set a steady pace at trot and canter as we head towards Wavecrest in time for lunch.  During the afternoon, riders will enjoy a relaxed out ride along the ocean edge and through ancient sand dune forests. Drinks on the deck at sunset as we sit and watch the great Crested Cranes come in to roost, end a perfect day.

Day 4

The departure time this morning is dictated by the tide. It a fantastic 3 hour ride either up the beach and back across country through rolling hills and traditional villages or the other way around, depending on the tides. Either way you get to ride on the hard wet beach at low tide – the gallop is exhilarating!   We are back at the hotel in time for lunch. Alternatively if the weather and tides are favourable we may take a picnic. This afternoon has a choice of activities.  You can take a boat trip up the river and explore the stunning mangrove estuary of the Nxaxo river by boat, hike, fish, or just kick back and relax in the Jacuzzi!  – this afternoon is flexible as there are so many options to experience!!!

Day 5

Today we start our journey back to Kei Mouth.  We ride inland this morning, crossing the river high up and away from the tides influence.  The slay paths and track offer great canters as we wind our way back to the beach. We ride back past Trennery’s and call in a for a great pub lunch.  We then head towards Kei Mouth and the pontoon crossing before dropping the horses off at the paddocks around 4 o’clock. The hotel shuttle will be there to meet us and transfer you to Miarestate Hotel & Spa on a Private Game Reserve.

Day 6

You are up early this morning, a quick cup of coffee or tea and a rusk gets us going and up into the saddle.  A leisurely  3 hour ride out exploring the reserve in search of giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest, Impala, Blesbuck, Kudu, Bushbuck, Warthog, and a multitude of other antelope species. The rolling hills offer lovely canters and stunning views across the bush veld and over cliff into the crashing sea.  Brunch is served at the lodge in the late morning, and you have time for a noon time nap, spa treatment or a stroll around the lodge bird watching or enjoy sitting watching the game grazing in the gardens.  An optional late afternoon sunset ride is available for those who need more saddle time!

Day 7

After breakfast, we again explore the reserve. The lodge staff will prepare for us the ultimate picnic bush lunch, and we truly enjoy being laid back and relaxed into African time.  The views on the reserve are breath-taking and this is the perfect wind down to a lovely week of beach and bush riding. Later we will hack back to stables and then the rest of the  afternoon is free to relax, be pampered in the spa, or enjoy the other hotel activities

Day 8

The shuttle will pick you up to transfer you back to the airport at 1.30pm and there is an opportunity to enjoy one last ride before it’s time to say goodbye to your horse and head home or onto new horsey horizons.
